Westies Valentines Day

Happy WoWL-entines day

So I thought I would create a colour version of a cartoon drawing I had for the Westies to celebrate Valentines Day or er… WoWL-entines Day!

WoWL Tools and Sketch Process

Basic tools to get the job done – HB Pencil, 0.7mm Clutch, eraser and A3. paper

With my trusty HB pencil, 0.7mm clutch pencil, grubby eraser and a pad of 220gsm Smooth Surface A3 cartridge paper I thought I’d share some of the process in making the first WoWL book.

Since developing our story with a script and storyboard, I’m now focussing on drawing out the various scenes. The way I like to work is to plan each panel, along with the script and storyboard, is by first doing a very rough outline using an HB pencil on the cartridge paper. This helps me to plan the positions of the characters and the action, basic effects and other details. It also allows me to quickly erase and edit each shot. Once I’m happy with the basic arrangements, I then outline the rough drawings using the 0.7mm clutch pencil to refine the sketches into a complete drawing.

After I’ve completed all the pages we need I’ll switch to inking in the pencil drawings. What I love about this process is that I have an original “master” which is fun to look back on and see how the cartoon has taken shape over time.

I’m somewhat a traditionalist (and romantic) at having the original drawings – something which you can’t have by doing drawings straight onto a computer.

Westies Characters

Westies Characters Taking Shape…

We’ve been busy working on the characters for the upcoming Westies cartoon. Just wanted to share with you Kevin’s development work for Casper, Basil, Lucky and Billy’s faces.

My personal favorite… Lucky’s goggles and lighting bolt hair!!

What do you think? Share with us your favorite or not so favorite bits.

Oh AND we have a new website!! Hope you like it.

Come dine with the Westies

Last year, five of my friends and I each had a turn at a “Come Dine With Me” inspired dinner party. This was held at each other’s house where we had to prepare a three course meal based on a movie them. Each person was voted on their food, cooking skills and hospitality for the evening. Luckily no cameras were documenting our kitchen catastrophes!

Many late evenings, drinks, laughter and good food later, my friend Valentina cooked up a storm with a Great Gatsby themed dinner and so was voted the winner. We decided to reward her amazing effort with a one off CDWM dinner where each of us cooked for her which included; thirst quenching caipirinhas and mojitos, a softly grilled peach salad starter followed by a tender chicken and potato stew main and a deliciously gooey chocolate fondant dessert. To finish the evening we provided a special talent show especially for her. My talent, or rather present, was to do a one off “live” drawing and create an on-the-spot A4 original Westies drawing, which included a terrified Casper running away from an overly hungry oven.

Hope you all enjoy it as well!!
