WoWL, Fulham!

Casper decides to go to Fulham.

Casper decides to go to Fulham.

The artwork for our first WoWL book is coming along nicely and I thought I’d share a sketch that I did today. Without giving away too much of the story just yet, this snippet shows Casper just deciding on going to Fulham. In this frame I wanted to show his decision by drawing him with a speech bubble depicting a very descriptive London street sign that says “London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, SW6”.

I love these road signs in London. One, because they are very iconic and there’s something fantastically British about them (perhaps it’s the style and length of wording involved – how long is the borough name to start with!) and two, because they include some detailed typography of which I tried to recreate. I liked the visual way Casper’s memory of a London street sign is remembered, complete with a brick wall.

More to follow on the progress of the first WoWL book!

Westies Characters

Westies Characters Taking Shape…

We’ve been busy working on the characters for the upcoming Westies cartoon. Just wanted to share with you Kevin’s development work for Casper, Basil, Lucky and Billy’s faces.

My personal favorite… Lucky’s goggles and lighting bolt hair!!

What do you think? Share with us your favorite or not so favorite bits.

Oh AND we have a new website!! Hope you like it.

Come dine with the Westies

Last year, five of my friends and I each had a turn at a “Come Dine With Me” inspired dinner party. This was held at each other’s house where we had to prepare a three course meal based on a movie them. Each person was voted on their food, cooking skills and hospitality for the evening. Luckily no cameras were documenting our kitchen catastrophes!

Many late evenings, drinks, laughter and good food later, my friend Valentina cooked up a storm with a Great Gatsby themed dinner and so was voted the winner. We decided to reward her amazing effort with a one off CDWM dinner where each of us cooked for her which included; thirst quenching caipirinhas and mojitos, a softly grilled peach salad starter followed by a tender chicken and potato stew main and a deliciously gooey chocolate fondant dessert. To finish the evening we provided a special talent show especially for her. My talent, or rather present, was to do a one off “live” drawing and create an on-the-spot A4 original Westies drawing, which included a terrified Casper running away from an overly hungry oven.

Hope you all enjoy it as well!!

Spotlight on: Mrs P. and Da Squirrelz

Mrs P. and Da Squirrelz

I’ve wanted to introduce these characters for ages now. I first featured “The Squirrels” in a post called Enter the squirrels a while ago and I always liked the idea that they would sneak up and steal something, especially under the noses of the Westies. They also tend to give Mrs P., Casper’s owner, a hard time by scurrying in over the wall from the trees to steal her cooking equipment or raiding her kitchen for her specially baked deserts and treats.

Poor Mrs P. and Casper have a hard time as they are outnumbered and over-run by a motley gang of young hooded squirrels, or more commonly known in the borough as “Da Squirrelz”. Casper and the other Westies usually manage to save the day and her delicious baking by coming to the rescue with some cunning plans.

Hmmm… I wonder how the Westies can retrieve her beloved baking utensils and delicious cupcakes this time?
